Is Your Fleet Ready for Summer? 5 Things to Check Before the Heat Hits

Australian summer is hard on vehicles, equipment and electronics. Add long days on the road, dust, corrugations and remote worksites, and small problems have a habit of becoming much bigger ones when you're a few hundred kilometres from the workshop.
For fleet operators, contractors and anyone relying on vehicle-based connectivity, spring is a good time to give your setup a once-over before temperatures climb and the busy end-of-year period kicks in.

Here are five areas worth checking.

1. Check your Starlink mount and hardware

Your Starlink might be working perfectly, but don't forget about what is holding it to the vehicle.
Check mounting bolts, brackets and quick-release components for movement or signs of wear. If the vehicle regularly travels on corrugated or rough roads, pay particular attention to anything that may have worked loose over time.
It's also worth checking that the mount you're using actually suits the environment the vehicle is operating in.
A lightweight setup can be perfectly suitable for general touring and on-road use, while mining, construction, agriculture and vehicles regularly travelling rough tracks need something designed to withstand considerably more vibration and punishment.
The right mount isn't just about keeping Starlink on the roof. It's about protecting the equipment and keeping the installation secure over thousands of kilometres.

2. Give your cables a proper inspection

Cables are easy to forget because most of the time they're tucked away and doing their job quietly.
Heat, UV, vibration and movement can eventually take their toll, particularly where cables pass through canopies, roof racks, service bodies or panels.
Look for rubbing, crushing, sharp bends, damaged insulation and connectors that have worked loose. Pay particular attention to entry points and anywhere the cable comes into contact with metal.
A five-minute cable inspection now can save hours of fault-finding later.
And if you're replacing a cable, make sure it's suitable for the environment. Outdoor-rated cable and correctly sealed connections matter when they're permanently exposed to Australian conditions.

3. Check how you're powering your Starlink

As temperatures rise, your vehicle's electrical system is already dealing with additional load from air conditioning, fridges, auxiliary equipment and other accessories.
Starlink needs a stable power supply to perform reliably, particularly when it's being used in motion.
Check your power connections, fuses and Anderson plugs, and make sure there are no loose terminals or signs of heat damage.
For permanent installations, a dedicated DC power solution is generally a much cleaner option than relying on temporary adaptors or cigarette sockets.
It's also worth reviewing low-voltage protection. Leaving equipment running when a vehicle is parked can slowly drain the starting or auxiliary battery if the system isn't configured correctly.
For commercial vehicles, features such as ignition control, timers and configurable low-voltage cut-off can take the human element out of it. The driver shouldn't need a checklist worthy of a cockpit just to keep communications running.

4. Test the system before you actually need it

"Starlink was working last time we used it" isn't much comfort when the vehicle is already three hours out of town.
Turn the system on. Connect to it. Run a speed test. Check the Wi-Fi coverage inside and around the vehicle.
If the vehicle has an external router or Wi-Fi setup, make sure everything is communicating properly and that the people using the vehicle actually know how to connect to it.
For fleets, this is also a good opportunity to check that installations are consistent from vehicle to vehicle.
When drivers, technicians or contractors move between vehicles, having completely different setups creates unnecessary headaches. Standardising mounting, power, cabling and controls makes troubleshooting and support much easier.

5. Think beyond the hardware

Reliable remote connectivity isn't just about getting internet into a vehicle.
Ask what happens when something stops working in the field.
Can the driver identify whether the issue is Starlink, power, cabling or the router? Does your team know what equipment is installed in each vehicle? Are replacement parts readily available? Can someone support the system remotely?

These questions become increasingly important as a fleet grows.
One Starlink installation is fairly easy to manage. Ten, fifty or a hundred vehicles is a different story.

A little preparation goes a long way

Remote communications tend to be most important precisely when you're furthest away from help.

A quick spring inspection gives you time to find loose hardware, damaged cables or power issues in the workshop rather than discovering them on the side of a dusty track in 40-degree heat.
